Lethbridge Lacrosse Association 2021 President’s Report

Good Evening, Meet the new pandemic, same as the old pandemic. The words Unpredictable and Unprecedented from the 2020 lacrosse year were again prevalent to start the 2021 season. All age groups had numerous players registered and eagerly awaiting the start of Winter Lacrosse. Mother Nature determined the 1st session would be cancelled with a November blizzard, then the pandemic determined all team activities would cease until further notice. Planned January & February Winter lacrosse camp was cancelled. The January opening of registration was pushed back to March and again into June. The 2021 Alberta Summer Games were cancelled. Typical box lacrosse seasons in Minor and Major lacrosse didn't occur. Minor lacrosse tournaments and Provincials were not held. That leads me to a third word beginning with the letter U, Undeterred! The volunteers on the Board and the members of the LLA were undeterred by the pandemic and overcame the challenges of pandemic restrictions to achieve success in keeping & gaining interest in lacrosse in Lethbridge & Southern Alberta. Without a 2020 Season, the Junior B Tier One Barracudas team was unable to hold the Cindy Garant Memorial game. Undeterred, volunteers held an AGLC licensed “Holiday Cheer Survivor” in December, with 50% of the proceeds being donated to the Alberta Cancer Foundation. In January of 2021, undeterred by pandemic restrictions, volunteers ran the “Corvette Raffle” table at Park Place Mall for 7 days, to earn a monetary donation for the LLA from the Milk River Kinsmen. In April, the Lethbridge Sport Council presented it's annual Achievement Awards. Long time volunteer, current Director of Coaching & Player Development, current Minor box lacrosse coach, current Junior B Tier One Barracudas GM and coach, Chris Kukucha won the LSC 2020 Coaching Excellence award. Registration for Minor and Major box lacrosse was officially opened in June. Undeterred by the late start to lacrosse, the LLA saw registration down only slightly over previous years. The LLA Board DID NOT implement the fee structure from the past AGM, instead going with a reduced fee amount to cover costs of practice times and S.A.L.A. games. I'd like to thank current Past President Heather Misek for volunteering for the role of “registrar” and expertly running the RAMP registration process and efficiently sending out email blasts with timely information to all in our Association. Lethbridge Lacrosse had a smaller group of 6U, 8U and 10U registrants this 2020 Season. The 6U, 8U and 10U players practiced twice a week and then combined with kids of the same age from other City's through out S.A.L.A to play games each weekend from mid June until the end of July. Lethbridge Lacrosse had one team in 12U, one team in 14U and one team in the 16U age divisions. The 12U and 14U teams practiced twice a week and played games against S.A.L.A. opponents on weekends from June 18th until the end of July. Teams in the 12U and 14U age divisions in SALA played in more games than any other Association in the Province. Thank you to all the parents, game day volunteers and coaches for ensuring a successful & exciting season. Lethbridge's 16U team also had 2 practice times a week, While the 16U Team played a total of 8 “league” games against S.A.L.A. opponents, the absence of tournaments, typically an important part of 16U lacrosse, could have impacted the development of graduating 16U players. Lethbridge Lacrosse accepted an invitation from the Calgary and District Lacrosse Association to participate in the CDLA “A” league schedule. Lethbridge's 16U team played in 3 league games and in 1 exhibition game against CDLA “A” opponents. Thank you to all the parents, game day volunteers and coaches for the additional time commitment to allow the 16U to to compete in two “leagues”. This allowed a foundation for success for 2022's returning 16U players and created lasting memory's for graduating 16U players. Currently, we have partnered with AlphaLax to launch a Winter lacrosse camp for age groups 10U to Junior. After two years of limited lacrosse programming, the goal is to accelerate player development at all level and continue our success in developing successful Junior A, Junior B Tier One and NCAA scholarship athletes. The Lethbridge Lacrosse Association is offering Winter lacrosse camp to players in the 6U and 8U age groups on Sunday evenings. While certainty has been lacking these past two years, we look forward to 2022 being a season that is as close to pre-pandemic times as possible. Without undeterred volunteers like yourselves, none of this would be possible. Thank you all!

Yours in lacrosse, Mike Medhurst President Lethbridge Lacrosse Association
